My design style
creating special areas for long-lasting enjoyment
Every landscape designer has a style that is unique to them. Informal designs are easier for me to draw, however I have drawn formal plantings that look great also. Informal backyard designs with maybe a pool or pergola would probably be what I enjoy drawing the most. I am a visual person and love to see color in the landscape so I draw with lots of blooming shrubs and trees.
Most of the plants I use tend to only need pruning once a year versus needing to be sheared every three weeks. To me, seeing a Knockout shrub rose in full bloom is a lot more enjoyable than taking a hedge trimmer to a Japanese holly. I like to use plants that have some fragrance, especially around your outdoor living areas such as pools, patios and back porches. I like to draw plantings with lighting in mind and figure out how to make the plants compliment the home when it is lit at night.
It has always intrigued me how you can create moods such as calm and relaxing or stimulating just by the type of structure and plants that you use in the landscape. I guess you could say I love the challenge of taking an area and making it into something that you can enjoy for years to come.
